Industry Updates: Delegation to the UK and big policy wins!

It’s already mid-February and there is a lot of positive noise about fintech in the community, parliament and the papers. The first of what we hope will be policy inroads for the fintech community passed this week being the Treasury Laws Amendment (2018 Measures No 2) Bill 2019. The bill allows for the regulatory sandbox to be expanded and for an increased testing period to help fintechs create a minimum viable product to take to market.  Thank you to everyone that has been involved in getting this important piece of legislation passed.

We have so much on the horizon to look forward to – from the Senate Inquiry hearings to two roundtables with Treasury, Regulators and members, and two new submissions.

We have generated significant interest from corporates and fintechs for Finnie awards and Intersekt conference. If you like more information about the sponsorships, reach out to Rehan..

Delegation to the UK with DIT

We are proud to celebrate the 2-year anniversary of the UK-Australia FinTech Bridge, as such, we will be leading a trade mission to Innovate Finance Global Summit (IFGS), supported by UKDIT on 20 – 23 April 2020.

This is a unique opportunity for fintechs to meet and network with UK’s leading financial services ecosystem and participate in a program curated by DIT.

Senate Inquiry

Promising conversations have been circulating regarding the Select Senate Inquiry with numerous mentions in the AFR and The Australian. We continue to be involved in as many roundtables as possible to present our members’ views in an informal setting.

We will also present our submission and answer any questions before the Senate on 28 February in Canberra.

On 6 February 2020, the Senate referred the provisions of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Research and Development Tax Incentive) Bill 2019 (the bill) to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 30 April 2020.

The bill contains three schedules and implements the legislative measure ‘better targeting the research and development tax incentive’ from the 2018 19 Budget, with amendments re: the application date and tax offsets.

We will be making a submission before the close date – 6 March 2020.

RBA’s Review into Retail Payments

The review, concerns primarily with card scheme payments, is intended to be broader-ranging and to consider whether there are any gaps in the payments system that should be addressed, as well as whether there are any regulatory issues arising outside of the narrower topic of card payments

The review paper released by the RBA can be found here:

We are working with members for feedback and comments to our submission.
